Betty G. DeGrote, age 90, of Waconia passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waconia.
Memorial Service held Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 2:45 p.m. at the Westview Acres Chapel in Waconia with Rev. Helmar Heckel officiating; interment at Faith Rutz Lake Cemetery, Waconia.
Betty Degrote was born on July 22, 1922 in Deming, N.M., the daughter of Augustus G. Harrison and Lucy Ann Dunn Harrison. She was adopted as a young child by her mother’s parents. Betty worked for the Waldorf Paper Company, Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 27 years, and Methodist Hospital in the mailroom for 11 years. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Waconia and had lived at Good Samaritan Westview Acres and for the last few months its Care Center.
At the age of 3, Betty enjoyed playing the pedals of the organ and eventually learned how to play it as well as the piano. She loved music and frequently played the church organ. She provided musical support for many Westview activities playing the piano, which she eventually donated to the Care Center.
While at Methodist Hospital, Betty volunteered in the Surgery Department, mailroom and dietary program. She was noted for her handicrafts, ready smile and tireless efforts to help others in need. She enjoyed collecting Teddy Bears.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents Augustus Harrison and Lucy Ann Dunn Harrison, her first husband Morris A. Roers in 1989, second husband Peter F. DeGrote in 1992.
Betty is survived by numerous friends and neighbors, including Doug and Chris Scholla of Waconia, John and Cindy Schlenk of Brooklyn Park and their children Alicia, David and Gretchen; Richard and Peggy Struck of Minneapolis.
