Charles was born on June 13, 1930 in Minneapolis the son of Archibald and Myrtle (Robinson) Butter. On April 20, 1954 Charles was united in marriage to Anne Robertson in Edina, Minn.
Charles Butter, the last of his family’s generation, boarded the bus for heaven at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday morning, Jan. 13, exactly 84 years and seven months (to the day) after his birth. After three years battling cancer and heart disease, he passed away peacefully from this world in the company of loving family members on a beautiful sunny morning.
He was a brilliant intellect, completing 29 years as a research scientist for Honeywell. In that time, he accumulated several patents, mostly involving cutting-edge work in semi-conductor technology. As gifted as he was academically, he was equally talented as an artist. He was a remarkable woodworker, and the homes of his family members are all sprinkled with his singular and spectacular creations. He had a meticulous style and an exacting eye.
Although a quiet man, he had a remarkable dry wit and enjoyed occasional pranks and bouts of silliness.
He was a loyal patriot who loved his country and those devoted to preserving our freedom, but mostly he was a loyal husband to his beloved wife of 60 years, his five children, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
We are saddened at his passing, but go forward with great confidence knowing that we will be together again someday soon in the company of Jesus Christ.

Grace was born on July 28, 1923 in Chaska the daughter of August and Amanda (Steinhardt) Miller. Grace was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Chaska. On June 12, 1947 Grace was united in marriage to Ruben “Tommy” Lahr at St. Joseph’s Parsonage in Waconia.
At a young age, Grace developed a lifelong love for reading and was often found reading a book when she was supposed to be working. Grace attended teaching college in Mankato, Minn., and began her teaching career in a one room school in Carver at the age of 19. She continued teaching during WWII and tells of going to work early and putting wood in the stove to heat the school building.
After the war, Grace met her husband, Tommy, and they were married in 1947. She was teaching in Excelsior at the time, and no married female schoolteachers were allowed at the school, so that ended that job!
Then Tommy taught her how to drive in the winter on frozen Lake Waconia and she got her drivers license to continue her teaching career in Victoria. She continued teaching until 1952 when they began their family. In 1960 she returned to teaching at Southview Elementary, where she taught until her retirement in 1989. In the 1960s she also returned to college at Mankato State College and took night and summer classes to obtain her Masters Degree. Grace loved teaching and she loved her students. She is remembered by many people and former students would often greet her in the community.
Grace’s two grandsons benefitted from her love of teaching. She was often asked to review their writing projects and she loved doing that. She turned Bs into As. After retirement, Grace spent a lot of time with her grandsons and was able to travel with her husband and family until his death in 2000.
In addition to her teaching career, Grace was active in the community. She was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary. She volunteered for many years at Ridgeview Medical Center, where she wrote a lot of letters to her grandsons when she was supposed to be “on duty.” She also volunteered at the library.
One of Grace’s greatest accomplishments was her role of editor of the first history book about Waconia and the Island. In addition to editing, she was instrumental in much of the research and writing of the book. In 2012, Grace moved into Auburn Home in Waconia, where she was lovingly cared for during her final years.
